thought he was a combination of Welsh
Cob, Thoroughbred and native stock of Arab and Barb descent. This
stallion eventually came to be named Justin Morgan after
his second owner, Thomas Justin Morgan of Vermont. During his time
with Thomas Justin Morgan, Justin Morgan excelled as
a Sire at Stud and passed his genetics to his off-spring with remarkable
consistency. By the time of his death in 1821, a new breed had been
created and established.
When Mr. Morgan died, Justin Morgan the horse, went
to a local farmer who entered his new horse in weight-pulling contests,
where he was considered invincible. Justin Morgan proved
to be an outstanding versatile gentle horse with high intelligence,
an active and willing nature, an excellent high trotting action,
and was hard-working. Today, the Morgan horse is a popular family
horse, being very versatile at either riding, driving, or light
draft duties.
The Morgan horse stands 14 to 15.1 hands high at the withers. He
has a medium size head, short alert ears, thick neck and deep chest,
broad back and muscular hind-quarters. Standard colors are usually
bay, black or chestnut, frequently with white markings.
