centuries of isolation on the islands
the breed remained completely pure and took on the characteristics
of a rugged, hardy, independent pony. When this pony was discovered,
it was taken from the islands and put to work in the mines. Indiscriminate
breeding led to the deterioration of the desirable qualities found
in the original blood-lines. In 1890 steps were taken to re-establish
the Shetland Ponies breed-standards. The Shetland became the first
native pony to have its own society and a Stud Book was established.
The Shetland Pony has a height of up to 10.2 hands at the withers,
making it the smallest of the native breeds. The pony has a small
head with a pronounced jaw, small ears and large prominent eyes.
He has a thick, shaggy mane and tail and occasionally feathering
on the legs. He has a short back with a deep thick-set body and
short strong legs.
The Shetland excels as a driving harness-pony and with proper training
and handling, will make a reliable riding mount and companion pony.
The North Light artists have modeled this elegant pony after a local
native pony named "Miranda", and have captured all of
the delightful features of the beloved Shetland Pony breed. This
is a larger, more detailed model than the other North Light Shetland
figurine. From the expressive face, to the very detailed mane and
tail, to the stocky round body and the short legs, they have overlooked
nothing. An especially nice feature of this model is the coat, mane,
and tail detailing
You can almost "feel" the texture
when you look at the pony.
